THE CONCEPT OF THE REIKI CLINIC

The Reiki clinic is an international meeting place with a Reiki practice, an emerging Reiki residential and working community, orphanage and education project for children. Inpatient treatments are not common, and most people come for out-patient treatments. The majority of the Nigerian population still have huge problems finding enough money for day-to-day living, and would not be able to pay for a stay in a hospital or clinic, even if it was a question of life or death.

With the new plans and expansion of the clinic, the future for children in Nigeria looks a lot brighter.

The Reiki practice and Reiki residential and working community
In the clinic, out patient treatments are offered by Nigerian Reiki practitioners on four consecutive days. These practitioners have been using Reiki regularly over the last few years, and they are either foreign guests to the clinic or are from the residential and working community. For the treatments there are two purpose-built rooms available, and also a meeting room. Apart from the treatments there ist a monthly Reiki get-together.

On the upper-level of the Reiki clinic are rooms for between two and four guest Reiki practitioners, who come from around the world and who decide to work at the clinic for at least six months. They assist at the orphanage and the children's education project, together with local Nigerian helpers; in addition to this they give Reiki treatments, look after foreign visitors and help to look after the day-to-day organisation of the clinic.

Anyone who is interested in working in the emerging Reiki residential and working community at the clinic, can contact us under Information.

In addition, there will be an active support group in Germany, who would have the following responsibilities:

- caring for the Reiki community at the clinic, as well as preparing foreign guests
  before they leave for Nigeria

- arranging and overseeing the sponsorships for the orphans at the clinic

-
supporting the education project "Creative Learning", through the exchange of experiences and working together with teachers, institutions and organisations.

Anyone who would be prepared to volunteer their time, experience and talents to help in one of these areas can contact us under Information

The "Reiki Children’s Home" Orphanage

There are many orphans in Nigeria; children who have suddenly lost either one, or both, parents in the long-standing mass-murders and massacres that have been instigated by fanatical Moslems in their fight against Christians. In February 2000 there was major unrest which resulted in four thousand deaths and a mass exodus of Christians from the North to the South. Since then there has been no lasting peace, and particularly since September 2001 there has been an increasing number of attacks leading to bloodshed and brutal destruction.

Children of school age, who are orphans or who have lost either a mother, or a more often a father live at the Reiki clinic orphanage.
Since September 2002 orphans are living in their new home at the Reiki clinic, with a 'Mother' and a carer. They are accommodated in a family-sized apartment on the upper floor and four bedrooms on the ground floor, each room containing two beds, a shower and a toilet. They also use the kitchen and office rooms on the ground floor.

We are currently seeking sponsors for the orphans. Each child will have two sponsors - one providing 25 € a month for their living expenses and another for the education or training costs, also at 25 € per month.

Children's Education Project "Creative Learning"

Decades of military dictatorship in Nigeria, a population explosion and increasing poverty for the majority of the people have led to a catastrophic situation with regard to education. School children and students receive very little teaching, and learn mainly parrot-fashion. There is little scope for individuality or for building up their own problem-solving capabilities, and this eventually leads not only to conformism and easily-influenced behaviour, but also to a lack of self-confidence and an under-qualified workforce.

The children's education project is for primary-school-aged children and is meant to augment the education that they receive in school. It encourages playful, active and diverse learning, and is designed to encompass the various ways of learning: visual, acoustic, haptish and motoric, as well as stretch and improve the children's problem-solving capabilities.

The education project was begun in the middle of 2000. Over one hundred and forty primary-school-aged children from Avu and Owerri were able to take part in the project during the first year. Over a period of five months, two experienced teachers from Avu were introduced to the teaching methods of the project, and also the optimum use of the donated teaching materials, by Ursula Klinger-Omenka, who was previously a primary school teacher herself.

At the beginning, the seminar room of the Reiki clinic was used for lessons. Later Ikechukwu S. Omenka was able to build a school hall during his stay, and since then lessons have taken place in there, four afternoons a week. Since March 2002, one hundred pupils come to learn each week.

The school-aged children at the orphanage all have place at the education project.

International Meeting Place

The Reiki clinic has become a meeting place for people from different nations, cultures and continents since its opening in July 1999. It enables the exchange of experiences in communal activities, and the chance to be face-to-face with the local people and their natural warmth and 'joie de vivre', despite the difficulties they experience with day-to-day living. It also helps get rid of inhibitions, fears and prejudieces, allows old 'wounds' to be healed and creates a tolerant, peaceful and mutually-supportive atmosphere.

There is a farm, behind the clinic building, which belongs to the Reiki clinic. A fruit and vegetable garden has been planted here .

The number of guests who have visited the Reiki clinic since its opening, and their impressions, speak for themselves. Three guest rooms on the upper floor, each with an en-suite bathroom, als well as a communal lounge/dining room are available.

The Reiki clinic in Nigeria is the first project of the ASSOCIATION FOR INTERNATIONAL MEETING REIKI - NIGERIA, a non-profit organisation, which is recognised by the German Inland Revenue office as a charity because it:

1. promotes public health care
2. supports international opinions and tolerance
and also, in future, because it provides education and training.

The Association was founded in 1995 by the Nigerian Ikechukwu Simeon Omenka and his wife, Ursula Klinger-Omenka. Both are Reiki Masters and authors, and have been practising Reiki since 1991 and 1983 respectively. Between 1992 and 2001 they travelled to Nigeria annually, using and teaching Reiki, managing the Reiki clinic. As from 2002 Ikechukwu S. Omenka, the Managing Director of the Reiki clinic, will visit the clinic once a year with a tour group.

Although the Association has already achieved a great deal, the admission of orphans is a huge responsibility, as is the continuation and expansion of the education project and the upkeep of the buildings. Next project is to build a school, starting with a Primary School.

The Association needs financial support, and relies on charitable donations. Receipts for donations can be provided, which can then be used to off-set against tax.

With your donation, you help to give the children in Nigeria a future.
